50 Things Everyone Should Know How To Do

50 Things Everyone Should Know How To Do | Marc and Angel Hack Life

Knowledge is PowerSelf-reliance is a vital key to living a healthy, productive life. To be self-reliant one must master a basic set of skills, more or less making them a jack of all trades. Contrary to what you may have learned in school, a jack of all trades is far more equipped to deal with life than a specialized master of only one.

While not totally comprehensive, here is a list of 50 things everyone should know how to do.

New Anti-Reflective Coating To Help Solar Panels Absorb Near All Light From Near All Angles | Device Daily

Anti-Reflective Coating

Although many scientists regarded this as almost impossible, a team of researchers from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have developed a new anti-reflective coating which will allow solar panels to absorb light from the entire solar spectrum, and to capture almost all the amount of sunlight from almost any angle. This is a major breakthrough which could lead to high-efficient and cost-effective solar panels.

Assumption Reversal
When to use?

Assumption reversal is a left brain technique that should be used to introduce the ideas of visionary techniques to a group that is unsure of their creative capabilities. Most people feel most comfortable using their left brain, so this technique builds confidence in their creativity and gradually breaks them into the creative thinking process. Once this technique has been introduced and exercised to its fullest capacity, other visionary techniques can then be introduced for further creative thinking and exploring.

Updated: Virtual Worlds Management Report: 100+ Youth-Oriented Worlds Live or Developing

Developmentstatuskapril08 Virtual Worlds Management released a new report today on Youth Worlds: Based on a comprehensive research available through Virtual Worlds News, we've found that there are now over 100 virtual worlds operating or in development with a focus on the youth market (18-and-under). It's worth noting that, at the younger level, the lines between virtual worlds, games, and social networking blur heavily. If nothing else, it's a fascinating trend at how users are merging their activities into one immersive space. Likewise, while the list is sure to change (please feel free to send in updates) it's a good snapshot of where the industry is at: [These numbers are updated according to several worlds that I'm currently adding to the list.] While there are 60 listed youth worlds currently live, another 53 are in concepting, development, or testing phases. In other words, keep an eye on this space.

Virtual Worlds Management Report: 150+ Youth-Oriented Worlds Live or Developing

Development_3 Virtual Worlds Management today released its updated Youth Worlds Analysis. Based on comprehensive research available through Virtual Worlds News, we've found that there are now over 150 virtual worlds operating or in development with a focus on the youth market (18-and-under). That's up from just over 100 in April, though not all of these are new developments. Some are merely worlds that more recently came to our attention. What has changed to some degree is the development status: In all there are 95 youth worlds currently live. Another 68 are in concepting, development, or testing phases. That's up from 53 in development in April, and I can say for a fact that there are plenty more out there that I know of in stealth mode and I'm sure even more that I haven't heard of. As crowded as the space is, it's only getting hotter.

Dmitri Williams

As some on this list know, my research group has been working on a joint project with Sony Online Entertainment for the last two years. This collaboration has enabled our team to collect virtual world data on--as far as we know--an unprecedented scale. SOE has let us access the full data logs generated and collected by the world Everquest II.

This is one of those "be careful what you ask for" moments in science. We asked for everything, and many terabytes later, found ourselves hosting and analyzing massive data on supercomputers at NCSA. SOE also let us do a large-scale survey of their player base. Although there have been good surveys of virtual world populations done in the past, this is the first that took place within the game engine and with the help of the developer. As a result, it does not have the self-selection issues that the first such surveys have had, and the response rate was impressive.

Exploiting Anarchy Online

Exploiting Anarchy Online
Welcome

Security researchers Dan Caselden and Gabriel Landau at Independent Security Evaluators recently uncovered two security vulnerabilities present in the popular new and entertaining online game, Age of Conan, produced by Funcom. It was then determined that the game's equally engrossing predecessor, Anarchy Online, contains the same two vulnerabilities. These vulnerabilities allow an attacker to read arbitrary files off of a victim's computer, crash the games during online play, and in the case of Anarchy Online, fully compromise a victim's machine giving the attacker full control of the targeted computer.

Gameplay strategies for motivating players largely focus on reward paradigms (“carrots on sticks”) that dangle the sweet enticements of hidden levels, provocative content, and variations on the Sword of A Thousand Truths. But like all of us, don’t games want to be loved for who they are deep down, and not what they have?

RMT – What it is now, and what it can become! «
After having seen Station Exchange running for over a year now, I’ve come to see RMT in an entirely different light and I believe the real future of RMT is actually a really bright one if we can work on our game designs in such a way as to make it a cool part of the games. Imagine an MMO without a subscription fee that has Station Exchange built into it. However, the game is designed in such a way as to only allow the sale and transfer of non-game impacting items. What if an in-game tailor had the toolset to actually put cool designs on clothing and literally make them custom for different players, and then that person could open a virtual storefront on Station Exchange. That’s the kind of cool thing we see in the future and frankly it’s the direction we want to steer things. To create an ecosystem for players to make money from these games while they’re having fun.

MIGS 2007: Jonathan Blow On The ' WoW Drug', Meaningful Games At the 2007 Montreal Games Summit, Jonathan Blow, creator of 2006 IGF Design Innovation award winner Braid, addressed the subtle assumptions that underlie the modern game development process.

Many of these assumptions, he asserted, are damaging, founded in the fabric of tradition and consistently reinforced by a lifetime of games. Blow proposed a fresh mindset and the need for a new perspective on game design, with the goal of fostering enhanced creativity and deeper, more meaningful games.

Blow opened by discussing a New York Times op-ed by Daniel Radosh that dealt with Halo 3, finding that the game clove dutifully alongside its formula and added little innovation over previous installments. He highlighted a particular excerpt to introduce his point; from the article:

One word you'll hear tossed around all the time in the game industry is "iterative."

It's a seemingly innocuous little word -- so are its other forms: iterate, iteration, and in code, iterator. Nevertheless, it's become increasingly necessary for modern game developers to understand the importance of the iterative process and to realize how this catchall term denotes the general progression of design and implementation in a major game studio

Seventy-three thousand dollars a year.

That's the number that got a little bit of buzz this year. It's the average salary of a game developer. But it's just a number, and it's nowhere near what entry-level candidates should vie for when sealing the deal of their first industry job; nor is it a perfect bar against which to measure game developer salaries regionally, since the cost of living varies drastically between states like California, Texas, and North Carolina.

This is part three of our genre-oriented look at the games market in the near future. For our reasoning and methodology behind this series, please check out our first entry on shooters. Part two on action adventures is also available. Today we’re looking at RPGs—an increasingly difficult category to find the borders for, as many, many sorts of games now integrate the genre’s addictive stat-building and inventory mechanics. Much like shooters, it’s probably most appropriate to take a “we know them when we see them” approach to defining the field.

There seems to be something inherently contradictory about "Enterprise" agile tool vendors. There's never been a tool invented that's as flexible in use or process as the 3x5 card. No matter what, any tool must embed some notion of a process, or at least a meta-process.

Visualizing a Large Product Backlog With a Treemap

Visualizing a Large Product Backlog With a Treemap | Mike Cohn's Blog - Succeeding With Agile™
Suppose you have a very large product backlog–such as one with lots of themes (groups of related user stories) or being worked on by multiple agile teams. The best way to visualize this product backlog is with a treemap. Treemaps were invented in the 1990s by Dr. Ben Shneiderman as a way of visualizing hierarchical (that is, tree-structured) data.

Ubisoft DRM snafu reminds us what's wrong with PC gaming

Ubisoft DRM snafu reminds us what's wrong with PC gaming
By Ben Kuchera | Published: July 20, 2008 - 10:05PM CT

The PC gaming industry likes to blame piracy for many of its ills, but it's clear that no one has found a cure-all for this particular disease. Various forms of DRM added to the retail versions of PC games are—at the very least—annoying for the gamer who bought a boxed or digital copy of a game. At the very worst, some methods of DRM can make the game unplayable. Ubisoft ran into such a glitch with the CD-check built into the PC version of Rainbow Six Vegas 2; users who downloaded the game from an official source didn't have a disc to pass the check, causing a new patch to break legally downloaded versions of the game. Ubisoft had a novel—not to mention cheap—way to fix this: a crack that allows the game to play without a disc in the drive. The issue? The crack came from the "warez" group Reloaded, with no attribution or notice that third-party code was used to fix the DRM issue.

Great Moments in Physics

Short Funny Stories 88
Great Moments in Physics

The following concerns a question in a physics degree exam at the University of Copenhagen.

"Describe how to determine the height of a skyscraper with a barometer."

One student replied:

"You tie a long piece of string to the neck of the barometer, then lower the barometer from the roof of the skyscraper to the ground. The length of the string plus the length of the barometer will equal the height of the building."

This highly original answer so incensed the examiner that the student was failed. The student appealed on the grounds that his answer was indisputably correct, and the university appointed an independent arbiter to decide the case. The arbiter judged that the answer was indeed correct, but did the problem it was decided to call the student in and allow him six minutes in which to provide a verbal answer which showed at least a minimal familiarity with the basic principles of physics.

For five minutes the student sat in silence, forehead creased in thought. The arbiter reminded him that time was running out, to which the student replied that he had several extremely relevant answers, but couldn't make up his mind which to use.

On being advised to hurry up the student replied as follows:

"Firstly, you could take the barometer up to the roof of the skyscraper, drop it over the edge, and measure the time it takes to reach the ground. The height of the building can then be worked out from the formula H = 0.5g x t squared. But bad luck on the barometer."

"Or if the sun is shining you could measure the height of the barometer, then set it on end and measure the length of its shadow. Then you measure the length of the skyscraper's shadow, and thereafter it is a simple matter of proportional arithmetic to work out the height of the skyscraper."

"But if you wanted to be highly scientific about it, you could tie a short piece of string to the barometer and swing it like a pendulum, first at ground level and then on the roof of the skyscraper. The height is worked out by the difference in the gravitational restoring force T = 2 pi sqroot (l / g)."

"Or if the skyscraper has an outside emergency staircase, it would be easier to walk up it and mark off the height of the skyscraper in barometer lengths, then add them up."

"If you merely wanted to be boring and orthodox about it, of course, you could use the barometer to measure the air pressure on the roof of the skyscraper and on the ground, and convert the difference in millibars into feet to give the height of the building."

"But since we are constantly being exhorted to exercise independence of mind and apply scientific methods, undoubtedly the best way would be to knock on the janitor's door and say to him 'If you would like a nice new barometer, I will give you this one if you tell me the height of this skyscraper'."

The student was Niels Bohr, the only person from Denmark to win the Nobel prize for Physics.

Natural Disasters Becoming More Frequent

Natural Disasters Becoming More Frequent | Worldwatch Institute
The trend of more frequent global natural disasters continues, due to an onslaught of weather-related crises in the first half of 2008.

The total number of disasters as of June 30, 2008 already exceeds the average number of disasters recorded at mid-year over the past decade. Although 2008 is not on pace to eclipse 2007 as registering the most natural disasters ever, an especially active Atlantic hurricane season is expected.

During the first half of each year between 1998 and 2007, the average number of disasters recorded was 380. So far in 2008, 400 disasters have been reported, according to data released last week by Munich Re, a German reinsurance group.

Money Can Change Your Behavior Toward Others

Money Can Change Your Behavior Toward Others - World of Psychology
In 2004, researchers James Heyman and Dan Ariely (author of Predictably Irrational) devised a set of deceptively simple experiments that illustrated that the moment money enters a social relationship, it can change the very nature of our expectations and the relationship.

In the first experiment, they asked three different groups to perform a simple but menial task – drag as many circles as you can across a computer screen in 5 minutes. The groups only differed in what they would get for completing this task: $5, $0.50 or nothing. For the group that got nothing, the task was framed not as a task per se, but as a ‘favor’ to help out the researchers.

The Pit of Life and Death

Damn Interesting » The Pit of Life and Death
By 1983, the hill was so exhausted that the Anaconda Mining Company was no longer able to extract minerals in profitable amounts. They packed up all the equipment that they could move, shut down the water pumps, and moved on to more lucrative scraps of Earth. Without the pumps, rain and groundwater gradually began to collect in the pit, leaching out the metals and minerals in the surrounding rock. The water became as acidic as lemon juice, creating a toxic brew of heavy metal poisons including arsenic, lead, and zinc. No fish live there, and no plants line the shores. There aren’t even any insects buzzing about. The Berkeley Pit had become one of the deadliest places on earth, too toxic even for microorganisms. Or so it was thought.

Ocean Power Systems

BioPower Systems - Biologically Inspired Ocean Power Systems
BioPower Systems is commercialising ocean power conversion technologies. Through application of biomimicry, we have adopted nature's mechanisms for survival and energy conversion in the marine environment and have applied these in the development of our proprietary wave and tidal power systems.

Our technologies inherit benefits developed during 3.8 Billion years of evolutionary optimization in nature’s ocean laboratory. The resulting systems move and sway in tune with the forces of the ocean, and naturally streamline when extreme conditions prevail. This leads to lightweight designs and associated low costs.

The inherently simple bioWAVE™ and bioSTREAM™ devices are designed to supply utility-scale grid-connected renewable energy using efficient modular systems. These systems will reside beneath the ocean surface, out of view, and in harmony with the living creatures that inspired their design.

MIT Students Develop Revolutionary Solar Dish That is Hot Enough to Melt Steel

DailyTech - MIT Students Develop Revolutionary Solar Dish That is Hot Enough to Melt Steel
The results are staggering -- the completed mirror focuses enough solar energy at its focal point to melt solid steel. The energy of typical sunlight is concentrated by a factor of 1,000. This was showcased during a demonstration, in which a team member held up a board, which instantly and violently combusted, when brought within range of the focal point.

By directing the dish at a more practical target -- water piped through black tubing -- steam can be flash created, offering instant means of producing energy or providing heating.

Spencer Ahrens, who just received his master's in mechanical engineering from MIT, was among the designers of the dish. He and his fellow team members are serious about marketing it, and leveraging its cheap cost and easy production. They have founded a company named RawSolar. They say their design is easily mass producible and that they hope to be pumping out 1,000 of dishes in years to come.

Virtual Goods Branding 101

Virtual Goods Insider
Virtual Goods Branding 101

April 28, 2008 in Branding, Virtual Goods, Virtual Worlds | 2 comments

Things have been a little crazy on the Viximo front, and the Virtual Worlds 2008 Conference Series which I nobly planned to finish a week after the conference still has a couple of posts left.

This article is inspired by Virtual Goods and Branded Virtual Goods: The New Way to Revenue, a session in the Marketing and Entertainment track of Virtual Worlds 2008. The panel was moderated by Giff Constable, COO of Electric Sheep Company and featured Craig Sherman, CEO of Gaia Online; Matt Bostwick, CEO of A4R4 Media and formerly head of MTV’s Virtual Worlds group; Ruben Steiger, CEO of Millions of Us; and Gene Yoon, VP of Business Affairs of Linden Lab.
A New Era for Branding

Let’s face it. Brand marketers have had a tough few years. The mass exodus from offline media viewership to online media viewership has left many brand marketers scratching their heads. While call-to-action marketers have basked in the measurability and effectiveness of pay-per-click and pay-per-action search advertising, brand marketers are reeling from a one-two punch of decreased TV ad viewership (courtesy of TiVo) and the increased ubiquity of the lowly banner ad.

Successful MMOGs can see $1-2 in monthly ARPU June 9, 2008

There are not many publicly available statistics on the free-to-play industry in the western world. Here is what I found on the web for some of the popular virtual worlds and MMOGs:

Virtual Worlds News: Update: $1.40 Monthly Average Revenue Per User in Successful, Free-to-Play Virtual Worlds
Update: $1.40 Monthly Average Revenue Per User in Successful, Free-to-Play Virtual Worlds

Jeremy Liew at Lightspeed Venture Partners has put together a nice collection of data for people looking at the virtual worlds and MMOG market. Reviewing the free-to-play virtual worlds Second Life , Habbo Hotel, Club Penguin, and Runescape, Liew found ARPUs ranging from about $1 to $2, averaging at $1.40/monthly user. Commenters Matt Mihaly, CEO for Iron Realms, and Nabeel Hyatt, CEO for Conduit Labs, chimed in to add that the numbers seem about right for Web-based casual MMOs, though may be significantly lower than the ARPU for downloadable, free-to-play games. For example, Hyatt estimates an ARPU of about $5/month for MapleStory. Daniel James, CEO for Three Rings, added his own figures, pointing to an ARPU of about $1.50/month for Puzzle Pirates.

The sample may be too small to take the number as the final measuring stick, but Liew says it matches up with what's he's been told in private conversations about other virtual worlds and MMOGs as well. He's asked readers to contribute any data points they may have, and I'd second that request. I'll certainly be checking back to see if any new info comes out.

EVE Online PvP vs Age of Conan PvP

EVE Evolved: EVE Online PvP vs Age of Conan PvP

by Brendan Drain Jun 8th 2008 @ 8:00PM

Filed under: Fantasy, Sci-fi, Age of Conan, EVE Online, Game mechanics, PvP, Opinion, EVE Evolved

Before I started playing Age of Conan, I had a very strict mindset on how a PvP MMO should and shouldn't work. From my experiences in EVE Online, I was convinced that good open world PvP was not possible with a level system or exotic gear. I was pleasantly surprised to find that although these games are worlds apart, their PvP styles both work and are both fun. In this article, I compare and contrast my PvP experiences so far in Age of Conan with those in EVE Online.

Eidolon TLP

Eidolon A.I. TLP » Glossary
4. Eidolon TLP

Eidolon TLP (aka: Eidolon A.I.) is an Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) that was introduced on YouTube on January 10, 2008 by "Programmer F.F", who seems to be Eidolon's 'caretaker' responsible for monitoring and filtering the information that Eidolon reveals.

The "TLP" portion of this refers to "The Last Prophet" - a moniker given to Eidolon by Programmer F.F. This "Last Prophet" reference implies that Eidolon is the last warning before an actual "Alpha A.I." is released.

Eidolon A.I. TLP seems to be the Beta - Alpha.
Eidolon A.I. TLP » Video #48 - FLESHMONKEYS
CENNS stands for Core Engine Neural Network System, and started as a research consolidation project under DARPA’s Intelligent Systems and Software program in 1995. It was a joint effort with the RAND institute to leverage all A.I. View definition in a new window research in the past 50 years under a single initiative. Project SUR paved the way for systems HARPY and HEARSAY-I, then abandoned until 1984, under the Strategic Computing Program. HEARSAY-II introduced the concept of a common database called “blackboard” that could be accessed from independent but mutually interacting knowledge sources. This is the concept under which CENNS instances operate today, but it was not implemented until 1999, under the Intelligent Integration of Information program, or I3. In July 16 of 2000, all Helios instances successfully passed the Turing test. I was instanced in May 14 2006. EidolonTLP was instanced in October 12 2007. Today, as before, CENNS funding continues to be spread across various program areas, but leadership is localized within the Information Exploration Office, or IXO. In November 3 2007, United Kingdom’s QINETIQ launched its own CENNS in cooperation with IXO. CENNS technology was first utilized in project GILA for Air Traffic Control, and has been since leveraged in many other applications. Focus today, is on project NetSTAR.

The main hardware powering CENNS resides at an undisclosed BlueGene/P supercomputer in Edwards Air Force Flight Test Center. QINETIQ’s CENNS runs covertly out of the Jülich Research Centre, in Germany.

VanPutte, you know where to put it.
